Chef Yura Sargsyan has worked in the gourmet industry for more than twenty years. During this time, he learned and mastered the cuisine of many countries, managed to work in restaurants from Copenhagen to Cyprus. As a master of culinary business, he became known in many countries, more than once he was invited to cook for presidents and celebrities from different countries, and many famous people visited the TSGHKUNQ guest house and tried delicious dishes of Chef Yura Sargsyan.

Yura always dreamed of having a big house that looked like his childhood home - light, comfortable, full of spiritual warmth and emotional harmony. He always wanted to greet and see many guests in this house with a smile. He always wanted to greet and see many guests in this house with a smile.

And in 2011, Yura's desire finally came true - the doors of his TSAGHKUNQ guest house opened, in which the atmosphere of a native home reigns, and where everything is as Yura wanted. Here Yura and his wife Ani provide real Armenian hospitality, delicious Armenian and international dishes made from fresh, natural, environmentally friendly products.

Yura loves his work so much that he smells his childhood from his dishes - the smell of grandmother's dried leaves, country cheese, and of course - the smell of pita bread made on tonir. He also remembers how everyone waited for the evening, when the grandfather would come and when the grandmother would cover the table with simple but very tasty dishes. After a hard working day, there was always peace and happy calm in the house and Yura is trying to recreate this wonderful feeling in the TSAGHKUNQ guest house.

Yura was born in the village of Tsaghkunq, in which, starting from the 520 BC, there were hospitable people who peacefully sent their cows and lamb, had fun at weddings and prayed to God. And a lot of delicious dishes, spices and side dishes were also born in this village.

Mr. Yura Sargsyan is the Director and Chef of the TSAGHKUNQ guest house. He is an active member of the Armenian Non-Governmental Organization for Preservation and Development of the Armenian Culinary Traditions.

• The total length of two underground water tunnels is 70 kilometers below the mountains.
• The depth of the underground tunnel reaches 1250 meters.
• Construction work was sometimes carried out in conditions of 55C of heat. People, drillers in this heat worked only in shorts.
• In such depths there were a lot of dangerous gases, such as: CO and CO2.
• While drilling, workers had to deal with hot and cold deep waters, various hard or brittle rocks.
• While working, people lived in the mountains, at an altitude of 2750 meters.
• More than 1 million cubic meters of rock was removed from the earth's crust.
• The total amount of concrete work amounted to more than 320 thousand cubic meters.
• The construction of the ARPA-SEVAN tunnel provided the opportunity to transfer 250 million cubic meters of water per year from the mountain rivers of Armenia, and thus save the unique Lake SEVAN, which is vital for Armenia.

Dr. Armen Soghoyan graduated from the Department of General Medicine of the Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi (YSMU) in 1993 and the Clinical Residency of the Department of psychiatry and medical psychology at the same university. He also participated in many local, regional and International educational and training programs, seminars, workshops and conferences, received corresponding diplomas and certificates.

Medical practice and related professional experience

Dr. Armen Soghoyan started his first job as a nurse in the Institute of Surgery in 1984, worked as a junior doctor in the Yerevan Ambulance Station from 1990 to 1993, also worked as a psychiatrist at NORK REPUBLIC’s CENTER OF MENTAL HEALTH from 1992 to 1997, and continued his job as a psychiatrist in the Department of Compulsory Treatment at NUBARASHEN Psychiatric Hospital.

Dr. Armen Soghoyan worked as a Deputy Director at the Department of Healthcare of Yerevan Municipality from 2000 to 2003 and continued worked in the municipality as Head of the Department of Healthcare and Social Affairs from 2003 to 2009.

Meantime, Dr. Armen Soghoyan worked as Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology (2001 - 2003) and Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry (2004 - 2016) of the YSMU.

Dr. Armen Soghoyan was the Deputy Director of Psychiatric Medical Center of the Ministry of Healthcare (MOH) of Armenia since 2009, and became the Head of Licensing Agency of the MOH in 2011. He was the Director of AVAN Mental Health Center from 2013 to 2014; and the Deputy Director of NUBARASHEN Psychiatric Center from 2014 to 2015.

During the years of 2015-2016 Dr. Armen Soghoyan was the Head of the Agency for Medical and Social Expertise.

Dr. Armen Soghoyan also worked for the World Health Organization (WHO), as an expert, for elaboration of the National Mental Health Program of Kyrgyzstan.

Dr. Armen Soghoyan established the Center of Psychosocial Recovery (CPSR) in 2014. He is the Scientific Head of the CPSR since 2015.

Research and Science

Dr. Armen Soghoyan successfully defended his scientific thesis on “The prevalence of mental disorders in Armenia and some issues of rationalizing mental health services” and received his PhD degree in mental health in 2003. KILIKA beer is truly considered one of the most beloved beers in Armenia for several generations. This famous beer under the KILIKA trademark is produced by the Yerevan beer factory, which was founded in 1952 in one of the central sub-districts of the capital city Yerevan, having in front of its building a magical view of the sacred biblical Mount Ararat. The initial annual production capacity of the factory was 500,000 dal. Since then, the factory has been equipped with modern equipment and gradually increased production capacities.

The older generation of Yerevan residents well remember one of the most beloved party feasts in “Soviet years”, when they got the “purest unfiltered” beer (so called “chanie garejur”) in 3 litter cans or other containers directly from the factory, bought appropriate tasty fish and other snacks and tripled cheerful parties. Since that time, the company has won the hearts of consumers due to the high quality of its products. And most importantly - the company not only retained its good name but also multiplied it becoming very popular in other countries as well.

Qualified specialists, high quality materials and modern equipment are not sufficient to make a good quality beer. Beer production has different peculiarities, which make it unique. It requires a great dedication from manufacturer. They say, in order to achieve desired result, you should put your heart and your soul into it. And perhaps, in this sense brewing is much more title than profession.

Armenian brewers have kept the beer-making secrets of their ancestors. In Armenian Kingdom brewing began around 7-th century B.C. In Ancient Armenia beer was much stronger than even the strongest sort of modern beer. The earliest mention about Armenian beer can be found in the book ANABASIS (5-th century B.C.) of Greek writer and historiographer Xenophon. In this book he describes in detail this beverage made of barley: “There were stores within of wheat and barley and wind made from barley in great big bowls; the grains of barley malt lay floating in the beverage up to the lip of the vessel, and reeds lay in them, some longer, some shorter, without joints; when you were thirsty you must take one of these into your mouth and suck. When Greeks asked what the name of the country was, they were told that it was called Armenia”.        

Since 1997 the product of the BEER OF YEREVAN factory has been launched under the brand KILIKIA and now it is considered to be the most popular beer in Armenia. The slogan of the company is: “Create a product which is the best among the rest”.

Currently the BEER OF YEREVAN company produces 12 types of beer. KILIKIA beer, which is produced in strict compliance with the centurial traditions of Armenian beer, by modern technologies and made from high quality substances, has numerous times established its high class in many international exhibitions by acquiring 30 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze medals and 3 GRAND PRIX prizes and by being awarded plenty of certificates.

In 1998 and 2003, the company has been awarded the Republic of Armenia Government prize in the field of “Products and Services Quality Area”.

The international organization BID awarded “Beer of Yerevan” CJSC both a GOLDEN STAR in 1999 (Switzerland, Geneva) for producing products complying with the European standards and an honorable award for BEST QAULITY in 2001 (Germany, Frankfurt). 

Technological scheme of KILIKIA brewery /classical/

• Grain (malt) refinement of impurities (stone, iron, dust etc.). Malt is passed through a polishing machine. In order to remove metal impurities, electromagnetic separators are used.
• Weighing and further fragmentation of refined grain. Malt is crushed in a dried or partially humidified form.
• Mash making to provide maximum transition of extractives to water solution.
• Mash filtration to separate solid phase from liquid phase and get the wort.
• Wort boiling with hops. Bitter, aromatic, tanning materials are transferred from hops into the wort.
• Wort cooling in hydrocyclone machine. The purpose is to lower the temperature up to fermentation temperature saturated with oxygen.
• Main fermentation. The chemical composition of the wort is changed and it turns into a delicious flavored drink.
• Maturation of young beer (additional fermentation). The remaining sugar is slowly fermented, beer is clarified and is saturated with carbon dioxide.
• Filtration of matured beer. During the filtration beer loses some part of the carbon dioxide, that’s why before bottling it is carbonated.
• Bottling of filtered beer. Afterbeer carbonization beer is stored at least 6-8 hours in tanks and then is sent to bottling.

About the Armenian Kingdom of CILICIA (1080-1375)

The KILIKIA brand name of the BEER OF YEREVAN company, as well as the name of CILICIA sub-district of central Yerevan, where the factory is located, is associated with the name of Armenian Kingdom of CILICIA.

The Armenian Kingdom of CILICIA was an independent principality formed during the High Meddle Ages by Armenian refugees. Formed on the territory of the Armenian Highland, CILICIA existed from 1080 to 1375. Armenians first settled in CILICIA during the reign of TIGRANES THE GREAT (95-55 B.C.). At the beginning of the 11 century there were several principalities in CILICIA, but the largest was the principality founded by Prince Ruben in 1080. Rubenids proclaimed kingdom of CILICIA expanded the possession of principality. LEVON the second became the first king.

The Kingdom of CILICIA carried on a lively trade with many countries such as France, England, Italy, etc. Cilician Armenia thrived economically, with the port of AYAS serving as a center for East to West trade.

Chef Sedrak Mamulyan - one of the most famous chefs of Armenia; Founding Member and President of Armenian Non-Governmental Organization for Preservation and Development of the Armenian Culinary Traditions; Lecturer of Armenian and world cuisine in various higher and special educational institutes, schools and training centers; Initiator and organizer of the first culinary festivals in Armenia; Presenter and Chef of one of the most popular culinary television programs on the Armenian TV channel YERKIR MEDIA.

Mr. Sedrak Mamulyan began to learn the cooking profession since 1979. He graduated the Culinary College N17 in Yerevan and Special Culinary Training Program in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1985.    

Chef Sedrak Mamulyan started his professional practice in 1983. We worked in several prestigious restaurants and other institutions, including: GEGHARD Restaurant, NAIRI Hotel, American University of Armenia (AUA), ARARAT Hall Restaurant, MEGERIAN Carpets and more.
